The 66th World Health Assembly (WHA) opened here on Monday, with nearly 3,000 delegates from 194 Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) attending the annual meeting.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, director-general of the United Nations Office at Geneva, addressed the opening ceremony and conveyed a message from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Tokayev said the overarching theme of this year’s assembly was the challenge of how to ensure the place of health in the next post-2015 generation of global development goals amid a lively and engaged debate on the content of post-2015 agenda taking place with and beyond UN family.
During the eight-day session, issues on top of agenda include WHO reforms, targets for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases, monitoring of the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, health in the post-2015 development agenda, pandemic influenza preparedness and universal health coverage.
